The Navajo Nation is taking its official stance against same-sex relationships overseas.
The tribe's attorney general has criticized the use of the term "Navajo" to describe gay and gay-friendly organizations in the United Kingdom. According to The Sunday Telegraph, more than 100 groups in the Lancashire area have adopted the name.
"The Navajo Nation is greatly concerned regarding the use of the word Navajo in any context, but even more so when it is used to express a view or policy that is contrary to Navajo law," Navajo attorney general Louis Denetsosie said in a letter quoted by the paper.
The Navajo Nation Council passed a law to outlaw same-sex marriages. President Joe Shirley Jr., who was re-elected last November and who appointed Denetsosie, vetoed it, saying it was discriminatory. The council overrode the veto.
