A Navajo Nation council committee is taking up legislation that would ban same-sex marriages.
Currently, the tribe's code recognized marriages from other jurisdictions. But
delegate Larry Anderson Sr. wants to change that because the "Navajo way" doesn't allow same-sex marriages. His bill does not define marriage as between a man and a woman but instead includes language barring same-sex unions.
The Senate yesterday debated an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would ban same-sex marriages. By a vote of 50-48, senators killed the proposal.
