Indian center in Wichita to honor Pawnee elder

The Mid-America All-Indian Center in Wichita, Kansas, will hold a powwow in honor of Lena Squirrel, an elder of the Pawnee Tribe of Oklahoma.

Squirrel was born January 16, 1917. The powwow is being held to celebrate her 90th birthday.

"That kind of thing is awesome to me," she told The Wichita Eagle. "I'm just an old lady."

Squirrel was raised in Oklahoma and lived in Wichita with her late husband. She made sure Indian newcomers to the city felt welcome and connected.

The powwow takes place Saturday from 4pm to 11pm.
