Montana governor signs Little Shell Chippewa land bill

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) signed into law a bill that gives the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe control of a few acres for the next 10 years.

The tribe would have control over an historic apartment building at the Morony damsite. Supporters hope it will help the tribe with its federal recognition efforts.

The tribe won a favorable preliminary ruling from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in May 2000. But the decision has not been finalized. Members of Congress are seeking legislative recognition of the tribe.
