Commissioners in Klamath County, Oregon, voted 3-2 to schedule a public hearing on the proposed return of 690,000 acres to the Klamath Tribes.
The tribes lost their 1.2 million-acre reservation when they were terminated by the federal government. Of the land base, 690,000 acres became part of the Fremont-Winema National Forest.
The tribes have proposed legislation to return the land. But a group called the Klamath Basin Alliance opposes the transfer.
The county hearing takes place February 3.
