Navajo protesters block work at power plant site

Navajo protesters stopped drilling work at the site of a major power plant on the reservation.

The group camped out Tuesday night in anticipation of the preliminary work, which is being done as part of the environmental analysis of the proposed $2.5 billion Desert Rock Power Plant. Protesters said they won't leave until they see all the permits and paperwork.

The tribe approved the development with Sithe Global. The 1,500-megawatt plan would bring in an estimated $50 million a year in taxes and royalty payments to the tribe a year.

The Dooda (No) Desert Rock group says the project will hurt the environment. Some who live on the proposed site say they don't plan to move.
