Editorial: A bright future for Santa Fe Indian School

"More well-deserved national recognition for Superintendent Joseph Abeyta for more than three decades of service to Santa Fe Indian School:

The National Indian Education Association recently bestowed on him its Lifetime Achievement Award.

Abeyta, from Santa Clara Pueblo, has painstakingly built the school along Cerrillos Road into one producing hundreds of solid students and plenty of high achievers year in and year out.

The schools student body is made up mainly of youngsters from New Mexicos 19 pueblos and the Navajo and Apache nations. Today, four out of five graduates go on to higher education, many at our countrys leading colleges and universities.

Besides gaining a first-rate education for todays complex and competitive workforce and hands-on experience in computers, the students learn about generations of Indian life and sovereignty issues and at the same time are prepared to work with the diverse cultures of our state and nation.

We congratulate Joseph Abeyta, as well as the faculty, staff and students of Santa Fe Indian School, on this latest honor and wish them well on what appears to be a bright future for the institution."
