The new chief of the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma said she will continue pursue the tribe's land claim in Ohio.
Glenna J. Wallace, 68, was sworn into office yesterday. She is believed to be the first woman to lead the tribe.
Wallace vowed to return the tribe to Ohio, where it was based before being removed to Oklahoma. "Tecumseh said the seventh generation shall bring my people back," Wallace said, The Oklahoman reported. "I am honored to say I am part of that generation, and as a people we want to be successful in returning to Ohio."
The tribe filed its suit in June over 146 square miles. The state is trying to dismiss the case.
