Abramoff Scandal
Griles said to be under scrutiny in Abramoff probe

Former Interior deputy secretary J. Steven Griles is said to be under scrutiny in the Jack Abramoff corruption probe.

Griles reportedly favored Abramoff's tribal clients on gaming, land-into-trust, recognition and other matters. But the former official denied acting at Abramoff's urging. Griles is now a lobbyist with at least two tribal clients.

In addition to Griles, Abramoff has reportedly provided information about members of Congress and their staff and other Bush administration officials. His cooperation could lead to a reduction in his prison sentence for defrauding tribal clients.

Abramoff reported to a federal prison in Cumberland, Maryland, this morning. He is serving five years and 10 months for bank fraud in Florida. He has yet to be sentenced for his tribal lobbying crimes but prosecutors will recommend that both terms be served concurrently.
