Arizona tribes hold keys to Phoenix-area development

Tribes near Phoenix, Arizona, are weighing development options amid the rapid growth of the metro area.

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, the Gila River Indian Community and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation surround Phoenix and Scottsdale. The tribes have opened some of their reservations to development but even more could be on the way.

The Salt River tribe has leased 9 million square feet of tribal and individual land for commercial development and another 8 million square feet is being considered. The land is being used for two retail centers and two mixed-use developments.

The Fort McDowell tribe isn't in a rush to develop but officials are considering a move of the casino to a more prominent location. The tribe is exploring other options.
