EPA extends comment period on Navajo power plant

The Environmental Protection Agency has extended the comment period on a draft air permit for a power plant on the Navajo Nation.

Comments on the permit are due November 13. People can also comment on the issue when the EPA releases a full environmental impact statement on the Desert Rock Power Plant.

The $2.5 billion, 1,500-megawatt, coal-fired power plant would be located near Shiprock, New Mexico Tribal leaders say it will generate revenue and create jobs.

Navajos who live in the area say the facility will harm the environment.
