The Environmental Protection Agency is holding two public hearings this week on a proposed power plant on the Navajo Nation.
The EPA will take comments on a draft air permit for the Desert Rock Power Plant. Sithe Global Power, a Houston-based company, needs the permit for the 1,500-megawatt coal-fired plant in the Shiprock, New Mexico, area.
The Navajo Nation approved the plant but some tribal members are worried about potentially harmful emissions. The EPA says the permit imposes some of the toughest standards in the U.S.
The hearings take place today and tomorrow.
