The town of Mashpee is meeting today to consider its stance on the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's federal recognition.
The town has until October 3 to submit comments to the tribe's favorable preliminary determination. The Bureau of Indian Affairs will make a final decision by March 31, 2007.
The town and the tribe have met three times to discuss land claim, gaming and other issues. Both sides reported progress but they disagree on the signing of a memorandum of agreement.
The town wants to sign before the recognition decision is finalized. But the tribe wants to wait until the BIA issues the final determination.
