Tohono O'odham chairwoman survives ouster attempt

Vivian Juan-Saunders, the chairwoman of the Tohono O'odham Nation of Arizona, survived an attempt to remove her from office.

The tribal council held a two-day hearing on charges that Juan-Saunders neglected her duties by failing to deposit $6.5 million. Beverly Rivas, a council member, laid the charges against Juan-Saunders.

The council heard from Juan-Saunders and Rivas but cleared Juan-Saunders of the charges on Wednesday.

Juan-Saunders is the tribe's first female leader.
