Tex Hall, the chairman of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota, is facing eight challengers as he seeks re-election.
Hall, the former president of the National Congress of American Indians, has served two consecutive terms as chairman.
The primary is being held September 19. The general election is November 7.
