Navajo Nation moves forward with education overhaul

The Navajo Nation's plans to exert more control over the education system on the reservation advanced with the confirmation of the tribe's first education superintendent.

Tommy Lewis Jr., a longtime educator, said he has spent his whole life preparing for the job. He supports the Navajo Sovereignty in Education Act, a tribal law that seeks to unify the schools on the three-state reservation.

The reservation is home to many public schools and Bureau of Indian Affairs schools.
