The Navajo Nation has received $413,000 in federal funds to close down the tribal Head Start program for the year.
President Joe Shirley Jr. went to Washington, D.C., earlier this week to meet with the Administration of Children and Families. The agency revoked funding for the Head Start, citing problems with background checks of employees.
The tribe has shut down the entire program, sending about 3,800 students and nearly 800 employees. The closure occurred about a week before summer break.
Shirley said he hopes to resolve the issues raised by ACF to restart the Head Start.
