Members of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation debated a $250 million oil refinery on the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota.
According to The Bismarck Tribune, opinion was divided along gender lines. Most women oppose the facility out of concern for the environment while most men look forward to the jobs it will generate.
The refinery would be located on the north side of Lake Sakakawea. It would process Canadian sand tar oil.
The Environmental Protection Agency is holding public hearings on the reservation this week to take comments on a draft environmental impact statement. The biggest issue is treatment of wastewater that would come from the plant.
