The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute has chosen Jeffrey Hamley, a longtime tribal college educator, as its new president.
Hamley, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, previously served as president of Saginaw Chippewa Tribal College in Michigan. He also served as academic dean at the Institute of American Indian Arts in New Mexico and extension dean at Northwest Indian College in Washington.
SIPI's last president left amid budget concerns. A $1 million deficit led to a layoff of 29 employees.
Hamley plans to improve outreach to New Mexico's tribes.
