A methamphetamine task force created by members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota is proposing tougher drug laws.
The Oglala Lakota Methamphetamine Prevention Task Force wants first time offenders to go to jail and get treatment. Second time offenders would be sentenced to jail time and temporary banishment from the Pine Ridge Reservation.
Third time offenders would be banished for life and disenrolled from the tribe. "I don't want my grandchildren to be impacted by methamphetamine. And I look at all the little ones and somebody's got to do it," Georgine Looks Twice, the founder of the task force, told KELO-TV.
Chantel Wilson was one of those little ones. The 15-year-old high school freshman suffered a brain aneurysm after trying meth just one time. "My daughter took one hit and it killed her. She was a child. She never had a future. Her future is gone now," mother Connie Wilson said.
