Over 1,000 people are attending what is being billed as the first national conference on HIV/AIDS in Indian Country.
Attendees representing tribes, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and First Nations spoke of the need to educate Native Americans about the disease. In the U.S., Native Americans have a higher HIV infection rate than whites. In Canada, Native people account for 25 percent of new HIV cases.
The "Embracing Our Traditions" conference is being held in Anchorage, Alaska. It runs through Saturday.
