Tobacco tax dispute riles Oklahoma tribes

Leaders of some Oklahoma tribes are rethinking their support of Gov. Brad Henry (D) in light of his handling of the tobacco tax compact.

Henry has signed emergency rules aimed at stopping certain kinds of tobacco sales. The Osage Nation, in a move supported by nearly a dozen other tribes in the state, has filed two lawsuits to challenge the rules.

Tribes backed Henry in the 2002 election but Wallace Coffey, the chairman of the Comanche Nation, said the compact issue has angered them. But Mike Bailey, the assistant chief of the Choctaw Nation, said Henry has done a better job on tribal matters than any governor in history.
