Lee Sprague, the ogema of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians in Michigan, was removed from office after a council hearing on Thursday.
Sprague, accused of financial mismanagement, acknowledged problems and said he was working to fix them. But the council voted 7-0, with one abstention, to fire him, the Associated Press reported.
A new leader will be appointed by the council until an election is held next April, the AP said.
