Leaders of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut are in London for the unveiling of a memorial to Chief Mahomet Weyonomon on Wednesday.
Queen Elizabeth II will unveil the statue to honor Mahomet, who was the great grandson of Uncas, the first chief of the tribe. Mahomet died of smallpox on a visit to England in 1736.
The five-ton, pink granite sculpture will be placed at the Southwark Cathedral, where Mahomet was buried in an unmarked grave. He had gone to England to lobby King George II for the return of tribal lands.
