The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of Montana plan to hunt a small number of bison near Yellowstone National Park.

The tribe is exercising a treaty right to hunt on unclaimed federal lands. Only a handful of tribal members will participate, a spokesperson said.

The state recognizes the tribe's treaty rights. Last year, members of the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho came to Montana to hunt bison.

Through its bison hunt program, the state also distributed bison hunting licenses to Montana tribes.
