Six California tribes who have poured more than $9 million into their political committee have so far spent most of it on Republicans.
Team 2006 spent $2.7 million as of Thursday, The Contra Costa Times reports. Of that amount, more than $2.2 million, or 84 percent, has gone to Republicans, the paper said.
The committee says it will support members of both parties. But one Indian leader says there's a reason most of the money has gone to Republicans.
"At this particular point in time, the Republicans are doing a better job of outreach to tribal governments," said Anthony Miranda, the chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association and a member of the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians.
The Pechanga Band, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, the Soboba Band of Luiseo Indians and the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians are the members of Team 2006.
