Sen. Daniel Akaka (D) beat back a Democratic primary challenge from Rep. Ed Case (D) by more than 15,000 votes, according to the latest election results.
Akaka, a member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, won 55 percent of the vote. Case conceded late Sunday night after receiving 45 percent of the vote.
The campaign was mostly about the differences between the more liberal Akaka and the more moderate Case. Both support Native Hawaiian recognition, which was Akaka's key issue in the Senate this year.
The Republican primary was being won by Jerry Coffee, who dropped out after suffering a heart attack. If he wins, the Republican party can pick a replacement to face Akaka.
