Kansas University plans to repatriate about a dozen artifacts in its collection to tribes within the next month.

The items represent just a small part of KU's collection of about 3,900 items. Native students have complained about the treatment and handling of the items.

KU hired Thomas Foor, a retired anthropology professor from Montana, to oversee the collection. Back in January, he said the school would return sacred items and cultural patrimony to tribes.

The return of tribal ancestors is being handled through a separate process.
