D-Q University may transform into non-tribal college

The interim president of D-Q University, California's only tribal college, is proposing to admit more non-Indian students and develop a non-Indian campuses.

Art Apodaca said the school needs more students if it wants to stay alive. He wants to create separate colleges for Indians, Spanish-speaking Indians, and vocational and health students.

Some say the vision is taking the school away from its history as a tribal college. Calvin Hedrick, a D-Q trustee, is calling for Apocada's ouster.

D-Q was forced to shut down last year after losing its accreditation. The Bureau of Indian Affairs cut funding due to declining Indian student enrollment.
