A former Bush administration official accused of lying about his dealings with Jack Abramoff took the stand in his own defense on Friday.
David H. Safavian, a former lobbyist for gaming tribes, used to work with Abramoff. The two remained in close contact when Safavian became chief of staff at the General Services Administration.
But Safavian said he didn't hide information from the GSA when he asked to go on an August 2002 trip to Scotland with Abramoff. Safavian said Abramoff wasn't doing "business" with the agency even though e-mails show both talked about government properties under GSA's control.
The trial resumes today as Safavian faces more cross-examination by federal prosecutors.
