Reburial of remains at Mesa Verde took 13 years

After 13 years of negotiations, tribes affiliated with Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado reburied the remains of nearly 1,600 ancestors.

The 24 tribes affiliated with the park selected Zia, Acoma and Zuni pueblos of New Mexico and the Hopi Tribe of Arizona as negotiators with the National Park Service. The parties agreed to rebury the remains and associated artifacts in a secret location at Mesa Verde.

The remains all had been unearthed within the park between the 1880s and the 1960s. The ancestors range in age from 700 to 1,550 years old.

The reburial is considered one of the largest under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
