Menominee leader sworn in despite fraud review

Karen Washinawatok is claiming to be the newly elected chairwoman of the Menominee Nation despite a tribal court-ordered review of the tribe's recent election.

Washinawatok said she will serve as interim chairwoman until the review is completed. Outgoing chairman Michael Chapman and three other tribal members have alleged the election was rife with fraud.

The fraud concerns absentee ballots. Some may have been stolen and some may have been cast. One tribal member who showed up to the polls to vote last month was told that his ballot had already been turned in.
