Legislative candidates for the Menominee Nation of Wisconsin discussed the tribe's future at a forum on Monday night.
According to The Shawano Leader, economic development was the dominating topic. One candidate spoke of the tribe's "financial crisis" that could be resolved by opening an off-reservation casino.
Chairman Michael Chapman, who is seeking a second term, also touted the proposal. He said the biggest hurdle in the project is opposition from the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, which contends its casino would be hurt if the Menominees open their casino.
