Tribal leaders in Minnesota will meet with the police chief and the mayor of Duluth to discuss police treatment of Native Americans.
Allegations of racial profiling and police brutality have been made for years but
two recent incidents have heightened tensions. Last month, a 29-year-old White Earth Ojibwe man died after a confrontation with police. Earlier this year, a 21-year-old White Earth man was shot to death by sheriff's deputies.
Kevin Leecy, the chairman of the Bois Forte Band of Ojibwe and head of the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council, asked for the meeting prior to the October incident. He has invited six other tribes to attend the meeting.
