A Bureau of Indian Affairs official in Colorado is warning that trust fund payments could be delayed under the most recent Internet shutdown order.

Priscilla Bancroft, the superintendent of the Ute Mountain agency, said payments were delayed under the first shutdown back in December 2001. She indicated that would happen again if the latest order went through.

On October 20, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth ordered the Interior Department to sever the Internet connection to its Indian trust systems. But he said the systems can be reconnected in order to process payments to tribal and Indian beneficiaries.

Nevertheless, the decision is on hold because a stay was issued by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals.
