Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas), the deposed House majority leader, is under scrutiny for fund-raising tactics that may have violated Texas law in one case and that involved disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff in another case.
In the first case, DeLay has been indicted by two separate grand juries for allegedly injecting corporate money into Texas elections. At issue is $190,000 that flowed from his Texas political action committee to the Republican National Committee and then to Republican candidates
in Texas. The RNC sent the money to Texas on October 2, 2002, the same day DeLay met with the top fundraiser for his Texas committee, according to The Washington Post.
In the second case, DeLay raised money to throw parties at the Republican National Convention in 2000 but he ended up transferring $250,000 to Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Missouri), who is now the House majority leader. According to the Associated Press, the exchanges occurred as Abramoff met with DeLay and Blunt to discuss his clients. Some of Abramoff's clients also donated directly to Blunt, the AP said.
