Rep. Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma), the only Native American in Congress, is lobbying fellow members of the House on a bill to recognize a Native Hawaiian governing entity.
Cole says Native Hawaiians deserve recognition. He is a co-sponsor of the Native Hawaiian Reorganization Act, a bill that is facing opposition from conservative Republicans and the Bush administration.
Cole is a former head of the Republican National Committee. He worked as a political consultant to Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, a Republican who supports the Hawaiian bill.
According to Hawaii Reporter, Cole's consulting firm was paid $100,000 from Lingles campaign in 1998, and $40,000 in 2002.
