A judge in Utah recognized a man as the biological father of "Baby Janie," the child of an Oglala Sioux woman who was murdered in Salt Lake City.
The father was identified as Carlos Najera by The Salt Lake Tribune. He was ordered to name the baby, who was born on August 18 after her mother, Darla M. Woundedhead, 30, was shot to death in a motel room.
The baby was born two months premature and is on life support and unable to breathe on her own. The baby had cocaine, opiates and barbiturates in her system. The state currently has custody of the child and the Oglala Sioux Tribe is seeking to intervene.
Four people have been charged with Woundedhead's murder.
