Navajo Nation authorities have counted 32 active gangs with 500 members on the reservation.

The tribe says gang activity is on the rise. This correlates to an increase in the trafficking of drugs, including methamphetamine, according to law enforcement officials.

A criminal investigator for the tribe said meth became a noticeable problem about two years ago. Last year, the New Mexico State Police Region 2 Narcotics Task confiscated 600 pounds of meth with a street value of $9.6 million.
