Confirmation hearings on Roberts to start Sept. 6

The Senate will begin holding confirmation hearings for U.S. Supreme Court nominee John G. Roberts Jr. on September 6.

The hearings will last six days, according to The New York Times. The Senate Judiciary Committee will then vote on Roberts on September 15.

Republican leaders hope to begin floor debate on September 26. President Bush wants Roberts confirmed by October 3, the start of the Supreme Court's term.

Although Roberts, an appellate court judge, has a stored legal career, little is known about his views. But papers of his Reagan-era work at the Department of Justice show he argued for limited civil rights, The Washington Post reports.
