Lac Courte Oreilles Band battles gang infiltration

A tribal, state and federal task force is cracking down on gang activity on the Lac Courte Oreilles Reservation in northern Wisconsin.

The Lac Courte Oreilles Band declared a state of emergency in 2002 after the gang-related murder on the reservation. Since then, there have been more than 50 prosecutions and harsh prison sentences for gang members who traded in guns, drugs and violence.

The activity is blamed on the Latin Kings gang. Tribal members who lived in Milwaukee are believed to have brought the gang to the reservation, where it was called the Lion Tribe Set.

The task force has eliminated some of the threat but tribal members say gangs are still a problem.
