The Crow Tribe of Montana adopted Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) on Thursday in recognition of his commitment to Indian affairs and improving tribal-state relations.
Schweitzer was given the name "My Friend" in Crow. "We are embarking on a new time for the Crow people," he said at a ceremony on the reservation, The Billings Gazette reported.
During the visit, Schweitzer paid the tribe $9 million for the state's share of a water rights and coal tax settlement. He signed a tobacco tax bill that is expected to bring $986,000 for Little Big Horn College. And he came with Department of Agriculture officials who presented the tribe with $3.5 million in federal funds, plus $500,000 in state funds, for water and infrastructure projects.
