Cities lobby to host Alaska Federation of Natives

Where will the Alaska Federation of Natives convention be held in 2006? The battle is on between Anchorage and Fairbanks for the chance to host the state's largest gathering.

Anchorage has hosted AFN since 1966. But some Alaska Natives say the city and its businesses don't respect the $5 million impact they bring to Anchorage. City leaders are hoping to address these concerns and lure AFN back next year.

Fairbanks is hosting this year's convention for the first time since 1988. Some Alaska Natives feel the location is more attractive to Natives who live in rural and Interior areas. Also, the Tanana Chiefs Conference, is located in the city.

This year's convention takes place October 17-22 in Fairbanks.
