• Surgeon General puts emphasis on prevention

U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona testified in the federal government's billion-dollar tobacco case on Tuesday.

According to news reports, Dr. Carmona said tobacco plans must be tailored to fit different communities. "What works on a Native American reservation in the Southwest may not work in New York City, South Dakota or Beverly Hills," he testified, The New York Times reported.

Carmona was called to the stand to support the government's case that tobacco companies must pay billions for misleading consumers about the risks of smoking. A lawyer for Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. questioned Carmona about other efforts, besides money, that could be used to combat tobacco.
