Ousted Pechangas file another lawsuit against tribe

A group of Pechanga descendants who were kicked out of the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians has filed another lawsuit against the wealthy tribe.

The Pechanga Band disenrolled more than 130 people last year, saying their ancestor Pablo Apis, a Luiseno leader who lived during the mid-1800s, was not a valid tribal member.

But the group says they were kicked out so that others could receive a larger per capita payment from the tribe's casino. Each tribal member gets about $10,000 to $15,000 a month.

The lawsuit was filed in state court. In an earlier case, a state judge asserted jurisdiction over internal tribal matters but the decision is on appeal.
