The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine and its business partner offered the town of Perry a tax deal if residents there support a proposed liquefied natural gas terminal on the reservation.

The tribe and Quoddy Bay LLC of Oklahoma want to build the terminal on 42 acres of the Pleasant Point Reservation. A group of tribal members and non-Indian residents are opposed, citing environmental threats.

In hopes of generating support, the tribe says it will pay the town an annual payment of $340,000. Tribal member Madonna Soctomah questioned why the tribe is not offering a similar payment to the tribe's Indian Township Reservation.
