The Morongo Band of Mission Indians donated 500 turkeys to "Operation Gobble," an initiative of California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante (D).
The tribe is a major sponsor of the project to feed needy families. The project distributed a total of 8,500 turkeys throughout the state.
Overall, the tribe has donated 6,000 turkeys to nonprofits in southern California. The effort is being called the largest Thanksgiving turkey donation in the state.
