The Ohlone/Costanoan Esselen Nation of California has a new chairwoman but not everyone is ready to recognize her.
Under a court-supervised process, the tribe elected Cari Herthel, a massage therapist, back in August. But former treasurer Phil Greene said he will wait until the court responds to his concerns with the election.
The tribe is seeking recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Herthel, 52, says the leadership dispute is helping the tribe's case.
