R.C. Gorman, famed Navajo artist, laid to rest

A reported 1,000 people attended Monday's funeral for R.C. Gorman, the famed Navajo artist who died last week in New Mexico. Stuart Ashman, the state secretary of Cultural Affairs, talked about R.C. Gorman's frequent comparison to Picasso. "Maybe Picasso was the R.C. Gorman of white men," he said, The Taos News reported. Gorman was born in Chinle, Arizona, on the Navajo Nation. He became famous for his paintings of Navajo women. He also made sculptures. Gorman made his home in Taos, New Mexico. He died at a hospital in Albuquerque after a bout with pneumonia. He was 74.
