A statue of Sarah Winnemucca, a 19th century Paiute activist who lived in Nevada, was unveiled on Sunday.
The 3-foot maquette is a replica of the statue on display in the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. Winnemucca was installed as Nevada's second representative in March of this year.
Winnemucca sought better conditions for her people but the federal government repeatedly broke its promises to them. She nevertheless continued to advocate for justice, equal rights and education. She was the Indian woman to publish a book, the first Indian woman to open her own school and the first Indian woman to lecture audiences throughout the country.
